Recipe of the week: Giant fishcake

Giant fishcake

Fishcakes can be a really good way to introduce fish to children and they can be made using a wide range of fish so can be used as a vessel for expanding their range of accepted fish.  

But, they are a mixed food. They are also made with potato so if you have a potato refuser in your house like I do, you might be wondering how on earth it’s possible to eat them as a family. 

Firstly, they won’t be expecting a giant fishcake as usually they are served as individual ones. This is a fun way of serving fishcakes (whilst making your life easier in the kitchen!) and might entice them into trying for the first time.  

I usually serve the fishcake with salad but you could serve it with peas, baked beans, broccoli, carrots or any other familiar and accepted vegetables. I leave some fish aside to serve separately. If I have some leftover pasta I’d put that on the table otherwise there’d be bread.  

I’d also put a sauce on the table that they like – sauce can be a useful way of helping a child try foods as they mask the flavour a little and can help make them easier to swallow.
