Storing potatoes

As today is #potatoday I’m bring you a potato related fact: 5.8 million potatoes go to waste daily in the UK.

To prevent some of that waste, please review how you’re storing and using your potatoes.

  • Don’t wash your spuds before storing.
  • Store them in a cool, dark place.
  • Potatoes need air so avoid storing them in airtight containers or plastic bags – netted or cotton bags, a cardboard box or a basket are best.
  • Store them with a little newspaper to elongate their life.
  • Keep them away from onions!
  • Check for any bruised and battered ones and use them first.
  • If you spot any signs of rotting, remove them straight away to avoid the spread.
  • Even if they have spouted, they’re still safe to eat unless they’re soft and shrivelled – cut off the sprouts and away you go.
  • Use the peel – either don’t peel them or turn your peel into crisps!
  • If they’re starting to go past their best, cook them up and store in the fridge to use over the next few days.
