Tip: Serve small portions

Do you find yourself saying that you waste so much food in your house because the children don’t eat everything you serve them?

Children are instinctively amazing at regulating their eating. They can listen to their hunger cues and are in tune with their bodies. They know when they’ve had enough, and unlike many adults, stop eating. They know not to force in one more bite just because it tastes so good or because they can’t resist a bit more pudding!

Some days they’ll eat a few tiny mouthfuls and other days they’ll eat you out of house and home. That’s quite normal!

By serving up large portions of food at every snack and meal, we’re bound to be offering too much the majority of the time, which will inevitably go to waste. Instead, serve small portions and allow them to ask for more. Better still, allow them to serve themselves.

If they don’t eat everything that has been prepared, what’s left will usually store for another mealtime (for them or for you!).
