How I support my children to develop a love of food in their own time

To support my children to develop a love of food in their own time, I use the Division of Responsibility model. It really does help me to stay relaxed and take the pressure off to set my children up for success at mealtimes.   

If you’re not familiar with the model, this is how it works:

I decide

  • What to serve (most nights)
  • How to serve it
  • Where we eat
  • When we eat

My children decide

  • If they are going to explore the foods I serve
  • What they eat
  • How much they eat

The outcome of this is being able to assist our children to develop a positive relationship with food as well as happier, less stressful mealtimes, it takes away that guilty feeling we might have or that feeling of failure because you’ve done your bit and then it’s down to them.
