8 mealtime tactics that won’t help your fussy eater

Grumpy at the table

Under the stress that fussy eating issues cause parents, I see and hear about them trying anything and everything to get their children to eat.

Here are eight common tactics I see parents using that are simply not going to help support a child to eat well:

  1. Making what they do and don’t eat into a big deal at the table
  2. Insisting they have a bite of everything or a ‘no thank you taste’
  3. Hiding foods without also allowing them to see what’s going into their food
  4. Serving only the foods you know they like
  5. Giving them an alternative
  6. Leaving them to eat on their own
  7. Withholding pudding or accepted foods if they don’t eat some or all of a meal
  8. Ensuring they are hungry enough by skipping snack times
