29% of fresh fruit and vegetables purchased by households in the EU is wasted.
And well, given that today is fresh veggies day and tomorrow is eat your vegetables day, what better time to assess which veggies in your kitchen could do with being shown some love by being stored to make them last longer or prepared and eaten before they end up in the bin?
If fresh veg is regularly wasted in your house, consider whether:
- You’re overbuying – make a meal plan and work out what you need to buy and how much
- You’re storing food in the right place to make it last – for example, potatoes in a cool dark place or tomatoes in the fridge, getting out only a few at a time
- You could store your produce better – wrapping herbs in a damp tea towel, storing carrots in a box of water or keeping a head of broccoli in a glass of water
- Your fridge is at the right temperature – maximum 5 degrees
- You can freeze some of the veg and cook from frozen when you need it (or buy frozen and tinned veg)
- You could batch prepare some veg to give it a few days more life.
