D is for Disgust

A to Z of family mealtimes D

How often does your child say ‘yuck’ or ‘eugh’ when you present dinner?

This can be a real issue when one sibling is a fussy eater and the other one isn’t, especially if a younger sibling is still at the early stages of exploring food. Their older sibling’s role modelling of eating behaviour is enough to put them off their food.

Having a calm and gentle conversation away from the dinner table about the impact their reactions are having on their brother or sister can be really helpful in reigning in the negativity at mealtimes and supports them to use more positive language at the table.

Beware your own reactions around food too. You might not be uttering words of disgust about a food you don’t enjoy but your face may well be saying it for you!
