One of the ways we can put the fun back into food is to switch up how we serve or eat it.
Now, I’m not suggesting you have to cut cucumbers into stars and turn sandwiches into bears or dinosaurs (not many of us have time for that and it ends up with waste or you eating odd shaped scraps!), but we do eat with our eyes first so making it appealing can help with the hurdle of getting our children to eat.
We can simply present food nicely to make a difference. A colourful spread on the table gives the wow factor.
Food on sticks are a winner most times – turn anything and everything into kebabs!
Chopping up fruit and vegetables into manageable, bite-size pieces makes them more accessible.
You can also buy fun plates with different sections or there are lovely placemats which can be used to offer distraction and for when you’re struggling to get a little one to stay at the table.
My children love eating with something other than a knife and fork. Food they can eat with their hands, on occasion, is great but how about giving them chopsticks, tweezers, teeny tiny spoons or giant spoons (serving spoons)? Brilliant for the entertainment factor.
And don’t underestimate the power of eating straight out of the serving bowl. A will quite often decide at the end of a meal that she will eat the veggies after all but only out of the serving bowl with the serving spoon then will wolf down a huge portion!
