I am a firm believer that any meal can be family or child friendly because what make it such is how you serve a meal and not the food itself. Serving meals family-style is a really easy way to enjoy stress-free family mealtimes and empower your child to eat well.
How to serve meals family-style:
- Set out all the component parts of the meal on the table
- Ensure there are one or two of your child’s accepted foods on the table
- Combine new foods or foods your child is still learning to like with familiar and liked foods
- Provide a variety of serving implements
- Allow your child to serve themselves (with support, if necessary)
- Allow your child to take the foods they want in the order and amounts they want (with an understanding that the food is to share!)
- Sit and enjoy your food!
Family meals don’t have to be served in fancy bowls and use up all your crockery. It’s fine to serve from pans and trays or boxes straight from the fridge. That just adds to the fun and intrigue of it for your child.
Remember to manage your expectations (it takes time for children to learn to like foods so they aren’t going to eat everything straight away and that’s OK) and not put pressure on your child to eat so that they can read their body’s cues around what and how much they need to eat.
