He planned and prepared his packed lunches

My children know what goes into putting food on the table because it’s important to us for them to understand that there’s isn’t a house fairy who kindly serves us our meals!

Over the summer, Harvey attended a holiday club for a week and needed packed lunches. It was the perfect opportunity to put some skills to the test whilst taking the pressure off me – I asked him to plan and prepare his own lunches.

He sat and planned a whole week of snacks and lunches, considering what he could make with the ingredients available, that he’d need a variety of foods over the week as well as what a balanced and sustaining lunchbox looked like.

Each evening, let us know what he needed out of the freezer, prepared what he could in advance to save time in the morning and, in the morning, finished it off with minimal input from me.

He got a great sense of achievement from doing this and put some important life skills into practice.

It’s important to celebrate the successes, no matter how small they may seem. Recognise this progress and more will follow.

Are you celebrating any mealtime wins this week?
