With fussy eaters and, in fact children generally, it’s hard to predict how much they’re going to eat. Some days they’ll eat a few tiny mouthfuls and other days they’ll eat you out of house and home. That’s quite normal!
If you’re plating up meals for your child though, you may be inadvertently serving too large a portion and overwhelming them, causing them not to be able to eat well.
Not only can they be put off by too much food, but also if there’s a large amount (in their eyes) of a new or disliked food on their plate. There may be something that they like on the plate but they may well reject this because of the other food on the plate.
By serving very small portions to begin with, we can allow children to embrace the food in front of them and to ask or go back for more if they want it.
This has an added benefit – anything not eaten will usually store for another mealtime (for them or for you!), reducing your food waste. Win, win!
