My children wouldn’t eat that food

Leek and potato cakes
I like the look of the meals you make for your family but there’s no way my children would eat any of it. How do you do it?

The first thing to let you know is that my children don’t always eat the meals I make either. But that isn’t a reason not to serve the meals my husband and I like to eat and to keep on offering these foods to my children.

When serving something new and potentially ambitious for your children, it’s helpful to keep in mind that they most likely won’t and also don’t need to like and eat the whole meal.

They may just eat one part of it the first time you serve it, the second time you serve it they may eat that part plus a nibble of something different, the third time they might eat the first thing they took, a bit more of the second thing and have a lick of something else. Or, it may be that you serve the meal 10 times before they venture further than the one part they’re comfortable with.

The more often you serve the ingredients, the more familiar they’ll become and the more comfortable your child will feel about trying them.

Ensuring there’s always something on the table that you know they like or will tolerate is key to being able to offer a wider variety of foods.
