We are grateful that we have a small garden which enables us to attempt to grow a few bits of fruit and veg and that our children are able to dig, sow, tend, harvest and eat (that’s the hope anyway!) so that they know how some of our food gets to our table.
But, being in the city, it isn’t often that our children see farm animals out in the fields and so we are blessed to have Windmill Hill City Farm on our doorstep. Having access to this wonderful resource is amazing in helping our children learn about where some of their food comes from, the importance of animal welfare and being aware of the hard work that goes into producing quality ingredients for us to eat.
As a farm adventurer (part of the childcare facilities at the farm), A has a very special opportunity, on a weekly basis, to visit the animals, collect eggs, feed the ducks and goats and take care of the baby animals.
Hopefully, our children will grow up knowing why we’re grateful for the food on our table, why mummy gets upset when they knowingly waste food and why, when we eat meat, we eat a little of the best quality we can afford.
