My star ingredient: Fruit scraps

Orange peel in water

One man’s waste is another man’s treasure.

Squeezed lemon and lime halves, orange and pineapple peels, apple and pear cores or mango stones are all items mostly likely destined for the food waste bin.

But this ‘waste’ is my treasure. If I can’t do something with it straight away, I stash it in boxes in the freezer ready to put to use another day.

Here are just some of things I do with them:

  • Herbal teas
  • Flavoured water
  • Fruity ice cubes
  • Fermented drinks
  • Flavoured milk for overnight oats
  • Freshen up the dishwasher and microwave
  • Add to my white vinegar cleaning solution

Christmas is coming up so you could also make candied peel or dry them out to make a potpourri with cinnamon sticks and dried rose petals. You can dry out orange peel, blitz and use it to make a face or body scrub. And I hear citrus peels have a use both in the house and in the garden for warding off unwanted creatures.

Are fruit scraps waste or treasure in your house?
